Job Description

Build the future of higher education for technologists by joining Developers Institute. As part of our notable team of Tech Leads, you’ll apply your experience to both hands-on software delivery and undergraduate-level instruction. In tandem, you'll have the opportunity to create a learning platform, whilst also guiding novice developers through their journey to becoming associate-level web developers and software engineers.

Developers Institute is a tertiary education provider offering sector-leading remote and onsite web and software development training and qualifications in New Zealand. We have a unique model working with our employment partners to ensure tangible employment outcomes for our graduates. We have limited enrolment numbers to provide quality guidance and mentorship to our novice developers (learners).

What’s involved

Here's a snapshot of what you can expect. We are a lean, mean growing machine, so expect the role to develop and evolve as we do.

  • Leading, managing, teaching, supporting, and mentoring novice developers into careers as junior and associate web and software developers
  • Managing novice developers' attendance, performance, issues and concerns
  • Co-design and deliver our cutting edge curriculum to learners with varying technical abilities (including beginners), creating an engaging learning experience
  • Plan, design, develop, deliver and support curriculum activities guiding novices through programming basics
  • Work alongside our internal team and industry connections to maintain a curriculum that is relevant and up-to-date
  • Professionally communicate tech software development ideas and objectives to a diverse group of novice developers
  • Establish clear expectations around course outcomes, and support learners to hit their learning objectives within a work-like environment
  • Maintain great administrative habits to ensure moderation and assessments are up to date and the communication loop is complete
  • Keep your skills fresh working on active client projects alongside other developers on the team
  • Work remotely or from our campus in Whangarei. We take a remote-first approach to all our classes and collaboration
  • Leading novice developers in their adoption of professional work practices

Preferred Start Date: January 2022

About You

  • You have the skill to articulate software development techniques to novice developers (learners) with varying abilities
  • You have the drive to inspire our next generation of tech developers with your industry knowledge
  • Experience with building and running large scale web applications, including automated testing and observability
  • Ideally, you’ll have about 4+ years on the tools as a full stack developer, with current industry experience
  • Demonstrable fluency in HTML/CSS, JavaScript frameworks and libraries, TypeScript, React, Node, Git/GitHub, front-end tools, and API development. Our program is all about getting the web foundations in place
  • Exposure to a range of modern languages, tools and frameworks
  • Experience mentoring teams in understanding the value of tests and implementing the testing pyramid

  • Equally important are your soft-skills - creating well-rounded team players is a core part of our learning experience
  • A knack for breaking programming concepts down into clear, digestible pieces
  • Teaching experience isn’t essential if you’re bringing a passion for sharing knowledge - you’ll be supported by our teaching team and Academic Director
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar areas of study or equivalent work experience.
