Developers Institute is a new tertiary education provider offering software development training and qualification in Whangarei.

We have a unique education model working with our employment partners to ensure real employment outcomes for our graduates. We have small class sizes to ensure we provide quality mentorship to all of our Learners.

The TA ensures on a day-to-day basis that all new onsite and remote learners are learning rapidly and are on track for success.

Teaching and Learning

Developers Institute’s programme is delivered via the Problem Based Learning Method and the Self Directed Approach. Design Thinking is also an important learning mode in our curriculum. The tutorial is the forum for learners to integrate information, obtain guidance and feedback. Teaching is provided through a facilitation-centric tutorial process. This guides the learner groups (students working in teams), ensuring the participation of all members.


Job Description

The Teaching Assistant (TA) is primarily responsible for ensuring new remote learners are supported from their very first Client-side development course. You will accompany your cohort as it progresses through the programme. The TA is a learner-facing member of the team, coaching successful behaviours, and talking code.

As a TA, you will work closely with a remote classroom of learners over the course of an 8-week cycle. You will be responsible for both the technical competency and entry outcomes of learners who are on track to join the next session of the DI programme. You will support a class of learners and ensure on a day-to-day basis that everyone is learning rapidly and is on track for success. Classes will have a mix of on-site and remote learners.

The role may require participation in internal moderation and supporting and mentoring learners through their learning journey into employment will also be paramount.


Key Responsibilities
  • Consistently ensure learner success and encourage autonomous learning
  • Proactively monitor, assess, and communicate learner progress by conducting code review, and providing technical feedback and support
  • Provide a strong technical staff member presence in our remote classroom to develop an aura of community and support through the learner' Software Development experience.
  • Effectively, warmly, and professionally respond to all learner enquiries through each of our communication channels (Email, Slack, Whereby, Google Hangout)
Other Responsibilities
  • Attending orientation sessions and regular meetings arranged for all programme staff, as required
  • Make the necessary room bookings and keep learners informed of administrative details, as required
  • Establish the group rules and structure of tutorials, (if directed) based on company culture and in collaboration with the learners
  • Contribute to the development of the course content, developing visual aids, providing technical writing support, and editing by working through assigned issues in GitHub, Jira and Google Classrooms.

Requirements

Skills and Experience

  • Completion of a Level 5 or Level 6 Developers Institute Programme
  • Junior experience in the following: HTML 5, CSS 3, Javascript, Node.js, APIs, Github, React
  • Building services in express, unit and integration testing in Javascript, full-stack development in Javascript, SQL, AWS, Agile and Lean methodologies
  • Ability to model learner progress and remove educational roadblocks, provide class facilitation
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks, and strong attention to detail
  • A skilled, trustworthy public speaker that can comfortably facilitate/lecture to large groups
  • Outstanding customer service skills coupled with keen and powerful pedagogical insight and ability to set boundaries and educational context
  • A compassionate, empathetic listener with warm, professional, written/verbal interpersonal skills
  • Passion for education and service
