We are looking for an experienced Product Owner to join our Transactional Tax product team here in Wellington

About the product:
Transactional Tax is a key feature of Xero and our accountants business practice. Important aspects for our customers can be summarised as ensuring that they meet their (sometimes) complex compliance needs with ease, and can input and review highly accurate data in detail. Our customers are primarily accountants and bookkeepers, though enabling them to help their business customers to grow subscriptions is also a consideration in some cases. We build new products for new and existing markets, and also support and enhance our current products that already exist in that market.

How you’ll make an impact
As a Product Owner, you will be responsible for executing on your products vision, strategy and roadmap. You will work alongside a talented engineering pod. Your skilful product leadership and management of the pod’s backlog enables the pod to deliver compelling products and services that solve real problems for our customers.

What does that look like day to day?
Overall you will leading a team through influencing and persuasion, without formal authority and making critical business decisions in the interest of everybody.
You have a clear understanding of Xero’s strategic priorities and how your products and services align to it. You can articulate a compelling product vision that the pod pursues with missionary zeal. They know what’s important, how they are contributing, and why what they’re doing matters.Together, you actively seek out metrics to validate a hypothesis and measure results. You enable them to instrument their work so they immediately understand how their products are being used.
You ensure product, design and engineering are considered side-by-side: They are all involved in product discovery. Your skill in modern product discovery practices enables the pod to understand and use many experimental techniques. You will make sure the boundaries of your products (what the pod owns and what they don’t) is articulated and understood inside and outside of the pod. With your pod you will build and support a compelling portfolio of products and services that your customers love to use. You will bring your customers and pod closer together and the pod will obsess over customers.They engage directly with them and get product ideas from observing customer struggles, and analysing customer data.
You will build and maintain strong relationships with your stakeholders who are involved in product discovery activities; and all stakeholders are updated appropriately on product releases and roadmaps.Experience required:
  • First and foremost Product ownership experience. This is an experienced level role so you'll need to be experienced in product ownership (for the lifecycle of a product )and have a toolkit of modern product discovery practices to draw upon.
  • Experience working with innovative software development projects at scale.
  • You have championed strategic priorities and helped others relate to and align with it through evidence-based decision making.
  • Proven experience using a range of metrics to monitor the success and health of products and services.
  • Experience connecting teams closer with customers (and not just be a proxy for them) with a solid track record of addressing customer needs.
  • Experience advocating for/evangelising a product or service with customers and stakeholders.

  • Great communication skills: You speaks and write clearly and articulately (without being overly verbose or talkative, and relying on jargon!)
